Clinical Study of Septoplasty & Conchotomy on Olfactory Threshold

Abstract
Septoplasty has taken a world wide popularity in the surgery of the deviation of nasal septum (DSN). We studied the effect of the surgery on olfactory disturbance of the patients suffereing from deviation of nasal septum with chronic hypertrophic
rhinitis(CHR).
Form May 1991 through December 1992, seventy-five patients who had olfactory disturbance and diagnosed as deviation of nasal septum with chronic hypertrophic rhinitis, and subsequent septoplasty with conchotomy. Among them, thirty-two patients
were
followed-up after the surgery.
The patients were evaluated pre-and post-operatively regarding olfactory function. There was improvement in olfaction after septoplasty with conchotomy.
It was concluded that septoplasty with conchotomy may be employed for the relief of lofactory disturbancer caused by deviation of nasal septum with chronic hypertrophic rhinitis.
